In India, the common civil code, or “Code of Civil Procedure” is a set of rules that govern civil litigation. The code is also known as the “Indian Judiciary Code,” and came into force on January 1, 1960. In Hindi, Common civil code is referred as सामान्य नागरिक संहिता or saamaany naagarik sanhita.
The code is based on the French civil code and was drafted by a committee that was chaired by Sir Maurice Gwyer.
