Acnegenic Meaning
In dermatological science and cosmetic ingredient formulation, the terms 'comedogenic' and 'acnegenic' describe two distinct pathological mechanisms by which topical skincare, makeup, and sunscreen products provoke skin breakouts. While frequently conflated on cosmetic packaging under generic 'non-comedogenic' claims, comedogenic ingredients cause non-inflammatory micro-comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) by physically clogging pores, whereas acnegenic ingredients trigger acute inflammatory immune responses (papules, pustules, and cysts) by stimulating bacterial proliferation and sebaceous follicular irritation.
