Recognizing the urgent national need for a centralized apex institution dedicated to speech and hearing sciences, the Government of India established the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) in 1983, named in honor of Nawab Ali Yavar Jung, a revered scholar and former Governor of Maharashtra. Modernized and renamed as the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan), the institute has served for over four decades as the national beacon of human resource training, clinical diagnosis, biomedical assistive research, and community outreach.
